Do's and Don'ts of Applying to a Surgical Residency

IU Surgery and Surgical Subspecialty Class of 2019

FREIDA - free database of all residency programs, from family medicine to surgery to ophthalmology. Organized by the American Medical Association (AMA), this database send surveys to all programs around the country. The information is exhaustive and includes minimum step 1 scores, range of step 1 scores of matriculants into that program, program website links, salary information, ect. You can add programs to your "dashboard" for quick comparison.

Doximity Residency Navigator - another database that sends surveys out to residency program directors. Importantly, this database is able to rank programs according to reputation so you have a general idea of where a program lies on the competitiveness spectrum. A unique feature includes current and past resident reviews (not available for each program) which comment on the environment and type of training they receive. Other data includes percent who sub-specialize (aka pursue a fellowship), board passing rate and percent of current and past graduates who are actively publishing.

ACGME - The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are responsible for overseeing all residency programs. A program is required to be in compliance with accreditation standards. If they are not, they are placed on probation or their accreditation is revoked (rare). You can use this database to sort residency programs by speciality and see which programs are in good standing, on probation or had their accreditation revoked.
